The Black Daiquiri

I can’t forget. I just can’t. I know that Father would have liked me to forgive and move on, to fight for the innocents like Gage did, but I can’t.

They took his life. Who would have ever guessed that there’d be an alien invasion? Rikti tried to conquer us. Heroes died. Gage died.

The heroes. The pressure of her pen had almost ripped the paper. They knew he didn’t have any protections, and expected him to fight with them. Dammit! A small wrinkle in the paper and blending of ink indicated a fallen tear. I’m registered, but whatever really. My “hero” name is the Black Daiquiri.

I finally enrolled at the university. Father passed away last spring. He’d been fading since Gage’s death and nothing I did helped. I don’t know anyone here, and I’m not planning to make any friends. If you care too much about someone, it can be used against you, and I’m not going there. I still train with my katana. I think I scare some of the other students. When I enter the gym, everyone leaves. Whatever.

Getting called to talk to the Dean is becoming a weekly habit. Maybe we should meet over coffee instead of her office next time… Anyway, this time, she suggested that I register my talents at City Hall and become and official Hero. Yeah, right. Me? A hero like those that convinced Gage to join in a fight well over his head? But… I’d have a little more leeway with my actions and be able to keep the PPD off my back. Hmm…

Well, I did it. I’m registered, but whatever really. My “hero” name is the Black Daiquiri. Ha! I’m not even 21, yet they let me register with that goofy name anyway. It’s actually kinda fun going out and beating up the various gangs polluting Paragon. They all seem to think they’re on the fast track up, but I’ve shown them otherwise – and there have only been a few fatalities. Not shabby for someone the higher level heroes call “newbie.”
